I started toying with the idea of having students design their own games as I followed their unusual fascination with game playing. My proposal to have them become designers of their own games was always welcomed with a lot of enthusiasm. MicroWorlds’ rich authoring tools with its Logo programming support provides the perfect environment for encouraging children to design their own games. Its unusual ability to appeal to a diverse level of learning population is its most important characteristic. Students, as young as 2nd grade, can enjoy creating their own simple games, while older ones can reach a level of sophistication that is only limited by their own abilities. Students, who had several MicroWorlds game design experiences, were ready to experiment with tools that are used by professionals, such as: Macromedia Director. The following sample of games presents both types. Starting with a simple race game designed by elementary school fourth graders using MicroWorlds and followed by two games designed by junior high students using Macromedia Director, the games are an outstanding example of student accomplishment. As I reflect on these projects, I am still fascinated with students’ learning achievements and the power of self-directed learning activities that bring it to the fore.
